Character History:
Link to Lupin’s Harry Potter Wiki

Abilities, Powers, Skills:
Remus is a half-blooded wizard, which means that he is the child of one wizard parent (his father) and one muggle parent (his mother). Nevertheless, despite being half-blooded, his magic is still an innate part of him. In the Harry Potter world, while the capacity for magic may be innate, it also must be studied and mastered via various forms. These forms — or “schools” — of magic provide a wizard a robust capacity for spellwork, potionmaking, self-defense, and even transfiguration. However, each individual wizard’s capacity for such things could be compared to an individual human’s capacity for math, biology, languages, the arts, etcetera.

Lupin is an extremely accomplished wizard, and even spent time teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts school. He is well-versed in his understanding of dark forms of magic, and extremely competent in areas of dealing and self-defense. Unfortunately, he is not quite as masterful at creating potions.

His magical capabilities include:

  • Wandless and nonverbal magic. Lupin has shown he does not need to use a wand or speak in order to perform magic, which is not true of all users in the Harry Potter universe.

  • Duelling, battling, and self-defense.

  • Charm work.

  • Healing.

  • Transfiguration. Lupin himself suffers from lycanthropy, but he is also capable of forcing others to change their form. He is also able to conjure objects out of nowhere, which is a very advanced capability.

  • Occlumency. Remus can close his mind from being read.

Personality:

Negative Traits
He’s a pushover. Since childhood, Lupin has been so desperate to be liked by the people around him that he often gives them more leeway than he ought to. He forgives his friends their mistakes and justifies their actions in ways that very often may come off as him being lacking in the courage to stand up to them. Lupin is somewhat aware of this failing on his part. This is shown in the way he even calls himself a coward when justifying his refusal to tell the Headmaster of Hogwarts that he knows very easily how his old friend managed to escape from prison and come into the school. This all contributes to a sense of complacency that really dominates his personality and behavior until the very end.

He’s self-loathing. After contracting lycanthropy at a very early age, Lupin has struggled with the stigma of his transformation and the profound impact that it has on him to be unable to control himself. (The author has, in fact, revealed that she intended his lycanthropy to carry the same personal and social stigma as being HIV+.) As a result of his own self-loathing, Lupin experiences bouts of melancholy that often contribute to his aforementioned willingness to give people a pass, and complacency about his life. At worst, however, Lupin’s strong self-loathing risks pushing him away from the people he loves. This is proven in the way he rejected the love of his wife and tried his hardest to push her away from him out of fear of his own inadequacy, going so far as to briefly abandon her when she was pregnant with their child.

He’s withdrawn. While Lupin has a core group of friends with whom he was close since childhood, it’s easy to get the sense that he’s a man who would be willing to hermit himself without them. He often relies on the stronger personalities of others to draw him out and bring him into the fold, and without their aid and encouragement it becomes apparent just how far and how deeply he’s willing to sink into himself. There is ultimately some resolution to this as he finds the necessary will to stand up against the fundamental evil in the series and put himself on the line, but this is really one of the ways in which he almost defies his expectation as a Gryffindor.

Positive Traits
He is more perceptive than most. Perhaps because he is more of an observer than the actors around him, Lupin has developed a keen intuition that allows him to have a good read on the motivations, fears, and desires of others. This is shown several times throughout his conversations with Harry Potter, where he is able to tell what his student is thinking, even when he hasn't said it for himself. His strong sense of understanding also makes him one of the most beloved professors at Hogwarts for the time that he is there. Perhaps because he feels so outcast himself, Lupin is also remarkably good at relating to his students that are also struggling themselves. He shows a necessary compassion for Neville, and really encourages him to flourish.

He is a peacemaker. In many ways it's really interesting that so many of Lupin's most positive traits seem to fall into diametric opposition of the way that he views himself, but that represents the man's complexity well. And despite the fact that Lupin is shown throughout the series to be an accomplished duellist, he often calls on a sense of rationality and patience to resolve conflicts between other characters. In Defense Against the Dark Arts class, he teaches his students to stand up and protect themselves against forces of evil, but Lupin himself would rather use logic to solve conflicts. In his own core group of friends, he functions as something of a "mothering" character to them all, providing guidance, unending support, and a willingness to understand.

He is tolerant. Undoubtedly because of his own struggles with lycanthropy, Lupin develops a sense of tolerance for others that defies many of those around him. While his childhood friends are shown to be near-relentless bullies, Lupin himself never participates in their torture. In his adult years, even when characters are shown to be openly intolerant and hateful towards him, Lupin manages to retain his cool. When Snape finds out about his lycanthropy, he openly taunts Lupin, but the man doesn't just maintain respect. He quietly defends Snape and shows an understanding of the reason behind his sentiments. Ultimately, the two men end up working with one another, which demonstrates the way that Lupin's tolerance for others helps to advance their ultimate goal.

Current Health/Status: Lupin is a werewolf and has suffered from lycanthropy since he was a very young child. He is used to his transformations and has become good at managing them, but an open field and some fresh rabbits wouldn't go amiss. An over-abundance of chocolate always helps him recover when he switches back.
Loadout: His usual everyday outfit: dress shirt, slacks, waistcoat, necktie, and a tweed jacket. His wand. A bar of chocolate.
